As the editor of the Curtis Institute of Music’s biannual magazine Overtones, I have led coverage of the school’s centenary and its building renovations, as well as stories about studio musicians, music and medicine, stage fright, social media use, and other issues.
“In the Spring 2024 issue of Overtones, as we begin to unveil a new visual identity and messaging that communicates the artistic excellence of Curtis, we also discuss the influence of the school on chamber music and the American musical landscape and look back at the history of classical music in the Olympic games. We follow Curtis musicians as they perform on a Star Trek-themed cruise and sit down with James Ross, the new director of orchestral studies, to discuss his aspirations for the school’s expanded conducting program. In Sound Off, we speak with four members of the Curtis community about performance anxiety, and in our Q+A, we talk with renowned composer, violist, and alumna Nokuthula Ngwenyama (’96). Four alumni discuss how the skills they honed at Curtis transferred from the concert stage to the courtroom and beyond, and we look back at the history of the school’s opera premieres and commencement ceremonies of the past.”

“In this issue, we explore how members of the Curtis community are utilizing state-of-the-art scientific advances to harness the healing powers of music in medicine. Our Q&A spotlights alumna Jennifer Koh (Violin ’02), newly appointed artistic director of the Kennedy Center’s Fortas Chamber Music Concerts. We delve into a discussion on gender inequity in orchestras, make a case for Curtis Opera Theatre’s recent staging of Ariodante, and highlight what to look for in a manager (and vice versa). We also share news about the Dover Quartet welcoming Julianne Lee (Violin ’05) as its new violist, salute the class of 2023, and more.”
